Responding to the neighborhoods requests for public green-space, beautification of chain link fences
I’m running the most at the moment with cultivating this idea with Krist D. The space/path from Union, since [according to the Memfix research] often US tourists are walking that way – pulling them up to Monroe via auto-music-garden path by Kudzu's. I need to get know the terrain better to visualize this with specificity for landscape design, but here are some ideas about this possiblity.
I am personally fond of working with scrap auto mirrors (example image above) and the creation of scrap “vessels” to contain native plantings (i didn't find any perfect example but there are reused cans and other auto-planters pictured below).
This aesthetic is easily tied to any available chain link fences – vertical gardens with attached vessels, and the installation of (air?) plants and instruments (scrap instruments or sculpted or?).
I am including sample images of chain link vertical gardens. The aesthetic of using vinyl stripping to create a design, and also additional growth trajectories could be awesome – could even be used to “map” or indicate (someone suggested an arrow at one meeting).
Also included is a planter art car nod to Cedar’s art car festival idea, which I love.
I’ve dreamed for years about making a sound garden using [scrap] metal mushrooms, shaped like chinese hats, which pound like a tin roof in a Memphis down pour. Could this be part of the park design? I had imagined at as an installation at the Metal Museum, but….possibly could be permanent here??
Also a thought: to invite Edge artist Tad P to design and execute at least a couple of tire art benches for the design proposal, with the caveat that they be constructed for exterior durability.
I’ve also seen some amazing things done with vinyl records and cds if someone is interested in designing with those materials as a nod to the musical history of the hood.
With any of these suggested reclaimed materials I feel that meticulous execution is a must in order that we avoid a “junk-art” aesthetic and instead create an eccentric but timeless / lasting / durable installation.
I don’t want to let go of the idea of using simple graphic symbols and messages which interact with the existing structures in the Edge environment, like what Marco mentioned before, with the turntable manhole covers, and messages of love. If we want to have one focus, it could be the making of this path, and those messages can be worked into the available structures of this area and then spill over to invite people to find this “park” from all corners and paths of the Edge.
I enjoyed this site for examples of auto scrap art:
I will also include some examples of auto part planters.
