From the Edge

From the Edge, a path of poems and prompts for a deeper experience of place.

A team of poets & graphic designers succinctly respond to the Edge, with a curated selection of provocative messages and symbols found along the sidewalks and walls of paths leading up Madison, Marshall & Monroe, from points downtown to Sun Studio, The Orleans Trolley Stop, and Health Sciences Park.

From the Edge is a reflective and interactive art experience that utilizes quotes, poetry, and calls to action by stenciling these words in various locations. It could be a reminder to look left or look up, a poem referencing the history of place, or a relevant and insightful quote relating to the neighbors in the hood. Inspired by graffiti artists from around the country, appx 100 pieces center around exploring “the edge”, (literally, and metaphorically), what that experience entails, and what can be learned from it to grow as a human. Some messages are hidden, awaiting discovery by the curious and curioser -- inspirational messages from the Edge.

Inspired by stories collected from the Edge, and the invisible histories we discovered while researching the Edge: the history of the railway, the waterway Gayoso Bayou, the Wonder Bread Factory and all it represents, and of course the lives, skills, & words of mechanics and musicians.

Our words and images are presented in a limited 4 color palette drawn from existing colors in the Edge, presented in Kiersten William’s research.

Some additional interviews & research, poetry, paper, ink, tape, vinyl stencils, spray-paint, sealant, photoshop, and elbow grease.
