Public Jukebox
A few weeks back I had an opportunity walk through Holiday Flowers and Events new building on Monroe Avenue. When they purchaed the building one of the floors was filled with jukeboxes and arcade games. They have sold many of the items but a large amount of them remain. Many of the jukeboxes contain records and apparently work. Soooo it got me thinking.......
I have been trying to think about how the musical history of the edge can be intergrated into a place specific art piece that ingages the viewer rather then creating complacency. While this example is not an art piece I love how a simple repetitive musical act can create and connect community.
While personal dedicatioin is as much about the above story I thought about how the viewer could generate the connection...through selecting and playing a song on public jukebox. There is only one example I could find of a publc jukebox but apparently it is not a real jukebox.
How cool would it be to use an old jukebox that would play only Sun Studio records and heard once or twice a day throughout the neighborhood. Or creating a kiosk of some sort that would house an altered jukebox that would play 45s for passerbys to create a private studio experience in the neighborhood.....hmmmmm
